MAITLAND-CONCEPT

The Maitland Concept is an internationally recognized concept of manual therapy, which was developed by the Australian physiotherapist Geoffrey D. Maitland in the 1950s. This method is used to examine and treat disorders of the muscular, joint, and nervous systems. Its defining characteristic is the combination of clinical experience, scientific findings, and treatment tailored to the individual patient.

It is not a rigid set of techniques, but rather a clinical decision-making process. The therapist examines, treats, immediately assesses the effects, and continuously adjusts the therapy. The goal is to reduce pain, improve mobility, and restore daily function.

Basic principles of the Maitland concept

1. Patient-centeredness
– The patient and their individual complaints are the focus.
– Symptoms, disease progression, daily life and personal goals are taken into account.

2. Clinical Reasoning
– Based on the patient's medical history and examination, the therapist formulates hypotheses about the cause of the symptoms.
– These hypotheses are constantly reviewed and adjusted during the examination and treatment.

3. Continuous assessment
– After each treatment, it is checked whether pain or mobility has changed.
– The therapy will be adjusted accordingly.
