TEMPOROMANDIBULAR JOINT DYSFUNCTION (TMD)

If occlusion is not correct, if the muscles of the masticatory system are tense, if the jaw muscles cannot rest at night because we grind or press, this can lead to problems and dysfunctions that far exceed the temporomandibular joint. This is called TemporoMandibular Joint Dysfunction.

A thorough assessment by the dentist, the orthodontist or the orthopaedist is necessary to identify this complex problem. The reason why TMD is so difficult to diagnose is because of the many different ailments it causes.

Symptoms may include:

  • Headaches
  • Tension in the neck / cervical spine
  • Shoulder pain
  • Migraines
  • Dizziness / nausea
  • Back Pain
  • Bad posture
  • General tension
  • Stomach / intestinal problems
  • Sleeping disorders

At Physiotherapie am Herzogpark we have been specialised in problems and functional disorders in this area for more than 20 years.

The importance of the interaction of the temporomandibular joint muscles, the upper cervical joints and the neck muscles has been proven in many scientific studies and leads to increasing interdisciplinary cooperation between dentists, doctors and physiotherapists.

How is Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction treated?

Physiotherapeutic treatment is always adapted to the individual situation and the symptoms of each patient.

This requires a detailed look into the medical history and a physiotherapeutic diagnosis of the musculoskeletal system in movement and also in statics during the first therapy session.

  • Manual therapy
  • Fascia release techniques
  • Traditional massage
  • Nerve mobilisation techniques
  • Heat applications
  • Individual exercise programme
